МЦД планируют продлить до Калужской, Смоленской, Тульской и Ярославской областей
Exciting news for commuters and travelers! The Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) are set to expand their reach, connecting the capital with four neighboring regions. This ambitious project aims to extend the lines to Kaluga, Yaroslavl, Smolensk, and Tula oblasts, creating a unified Central Transport Hub that will revolutionize regional connectivity.
During a speech at the International Russian Energy Week forum, it was announced that the four existing MCD lines will be extended to nearby regions. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing transportation links between Moscow and its surrounding areas.
«We have built four MCD lines, and now they will be extended to the nearest regions: Kaluga, Smolensk, Tula, and Yaroslavl oblasts. This is a unified Central Transport Hub that will continue to develop,» the official stated.
This expansion aligns with the vision shared earlier by President Vladimir Putin. On September 9th, the head of state outlined plans to extend the MCD to Kaluga, Tula, and other major cities in the regions surrounding the capital.
«We have decided to implement a large-scale program to modernize the entire Central Transport Hub. As a result, the ground metro diameters will be extended to Kaluga and Tula, as well as to other major cities in the regions surrounding Moscow,» Putin announced.
The President also highlighted that the flagship project will include the construction of high-speed railways. The first phase will connect Moscow, Tver, Veliky Novgorod, and St. Petersburg, with future plans to link the capital with other cities across the country.
Putin emphasized that modernizing the transport system will elevate infrastructure to a new level and create a foundation for economic growth.
«Such initiatives will take our transport infrastructure to an entirely new level, significantly improve the lives of millions of people, and create a solid foundation for the country’s economic growth. Dozens of Russian cities will receive a powerful impetus to move forward,» the President stated.
In March, plans to extend the diameters were also discussed by a high-ranking official. It was revealed that MCD lines are planned to reach 11 regions, reminding that their creation was the first stage in developing the Central Transport Hub.
«800 million passengers per year — this is one of the largest transport hubs in the world. Today, we see a need to extend the MCD to all major regional capitals. Moscow, together with Russian Railways and the government, is working on further extending these railway routes to 11 cities,» the official was quoted as saying.
Currently, preparations are underway to implement this initiative, including the development of a feasibility study and an assessment of the necessary investments for the project.
«The previous MCD project was implemented on a parity basis between the federal budget, Moscow’s budget, and the Russian Railways budget,» the official explained, expressing hope that a similar scheme will be maintained for the new 11 routes.
It’s worth noting that in July of this year, the number of trips made by passengers on the MCD surpassed 1 billion. This impressive milestone was announced by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.
«It’s impossible to imagine Moscow’s transport without the MCD. All four diameters are in demand, with thousands of Muscovites choosing them for their daily commutes. In total, the MCD has carried 1 billion passengers,» the Deputy Mayor stated.
He also emphasized that, on the Mayor’s instructions, the diameters continue to develop since their launch. «We are updating the rolling stock, modernizing infrastructure, opening new Moscow city railway stations, and will continue this work,» the Deputy Mayor promised.
Currently, the MCD system connects Moscow with several Moscow region cities, including Lobnya, Dolgoprudny, Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Podolsk, Zelenograd, Khimki, Lyubertsy, Ramenskoye, Balashikha, and Aprelevka. The first two diameters, with a total length of 132 km, were opened in 2019. The third and fourth diameters were inaugurated in 2023.
As the MCD network continues to grow and evolve, it promises to bring improved connectivity, reduced travel times, and enhanced quality of life for millions of residents in Moscow and its surrounding regions. This expansive project showcases Russia’s commitment to developing world-class transportation infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and creating a more interconnected future for its citizens.
